Frequently Asked Questions
Visiting
Can we visit you? Where is Gut Oggau?
Yes, gladly. We are in Oggau am See, on the western shore of Lake Neusiedl in Burgenland — Hauptstraße 31, about an hour from Vienna. From April to late September the farm gate is open on Wednesdays and Thursdays, 10 am to 5 pm. No booking: door open, glass ready. The tasting costs €39 and takes you through four wine personalities. If you have more time, ask for Deep: €79, with a tour of the estate and the cellar.
When can I come by?
Farm gate & tasting: From April to late September, Wednesdays and Thursdays from 10 am to 5 pm — just come by, no booking needed. Buy wines and taste spontaneously through the current wine family.
The Heurige: The Heurige has no opening hours — it has dates. We set the tables on a few weekends a year. The dates for 2027 are not set yet; as soon as they are, newsletter readers hear first. For larger groups we recommend reserving via reservierung@gutoggau.com.
What is the difference between the two tastings?
The Tasting (€39): You come by — Wednesday or Thursday between 10 and 5, entirely spontaneously — and we taste our way through four wine personalities from the current family. An exchange, not a lecture.
Deep (€79): the extensive, in-depth tasting — with a tour of the estate and an introduction to our philosophy. By appointment via news@gutoggau.com.
Is accommodation included in the Root Time retreat?
No. Included are all meals from Friday evening to Sunday noon, all wines and drinks, the tour of the estate and cellar, and the tasting through the whole wine family. For accommodation we recommend Taubenkobel in Schützen am Gebirge, Kirchenwirt in Rust, or a room in Oggau — both houses are small, book early.
Our Wines
What does Demeter mean?
Demeter is the certification for biodynamic farming — the strictest one there is. No synthetic fertiliser, no herbicides, no synthetic sprays. And more than a list of prohibitions: the farm is thought of as one organism. Vines, soil, animals, compost, the course of the year — everything belongs together. For us that means working by hand and with the horses. It is slower. That is the point.
What is natural wine?
Natural wine is not a protected term — everyone means something slightly different by it. For us it means: the grapes come from biodynamic farming. In the cellar everything ferments spontaneously, with the yeasts that are there anyway. We do not filter, we do not fine, and we add no sulphur. That such a wine can be cloudy or carry sediment is not a flaw — it is a sign that it is alive.
How do I store natural wine? What do I do if a bottle is cloudy?
Cool (ideally 12–16 °C), dark, and lying down. Cloudiness and natural sediment are not a flaw in our unfiltered wines but a sign of liveliness — simply stand the bottle upright for a day before opening. And give the wine a moment of air after opening: many of our personalities only reveal themselves in conversation.
Shipping
Do you ship to the USA?
Yes. We ship to the USA — shipping costs are calculated at checkout. Please note: deliveries to the USA may incur import duties and customs fees, which are payable by you as the recipient. It can take up to 5 business days from the order date until your order ships.
Which countries do you ship to?
Almost all of the EU, plus Switzerland, the United Kingdom, Norway and Iceland — and beyond that the USA, Canada, Japan, South Korea, Singapore, Hong Kong, Malaysia, Australia, New Zealand, Israel and the United Arab Emirates. Your country isn’t listed? Write to office@gutoggau.com — we almost always find a way.
Members Club
When does the wine arrive if I become a member? Can I cancel? Can I gift a membership?
Your bottles from the wine family are delivered to your door once a year. The membership renews automatically for another year — before each renewal you receive a reminder by email in good time. You can cancel or adjust at any time yourself via the “Manage your membership” link in your emails — or with a short note to office@gutoggau.com. Gifting? Write to us — we’ll set it up personally.
